Circus VS Space - Setting Up The Dust Palace's Circus Studio

The closure of our circus sister space The Castle has shaken the dream a little and stands to prove the near impossibility of running a space if you want to continue to be a professional circus performer.

IMGP4550.JPGHere's the dream... you get a mint training space 24/7... you can have everything you want and whenever you're not out working you're in there training and getting more mac...

I was chatting with Pauly and Derryn last week as we took down the poles... and they experienced the exact same thing that now has me training between 6 and 8am every morning... having a space requires so much time and effort it's near impossible to get ANY training time at all!

So you have to ask why... why did we do this? Why sign a lease upwards of $30k for a training space you barely get to use...

the answer is... as hard as it is... it's AMAZING!! It's wonderful seeing people come here and get excited about circus, learn things they never thought they possibly could, get fit and strong... sometimes after class they literally bounce/bubble out the door!

We'd been making shows by rigging a couple of bits and bobs in empty warehouses for a couple of years... the number of times we were moved right on crunch time was too many to be a funny coincidence anymore...

We were approached by an amazing angel of a man who asked us what would take us to the next level... We decided a rehearsal space would and he helped us set it up.

It's taken us a year and a half, hours and hours of work and a whole lot of good will to get it looking good... and the school is growing but not quite at break even numbers yet...

It's hard to fit rehearsals for shows around the classes... but at the end of the day the space is the one thing that makes it possible for us to be professional... which is the exciting bit...

The core group of us have leveled up massively in our time here... and we're able to work on fantastic exciting shows hopefully one day enabling us to push circus-theatre into new places...
